The importance of working together to change the future of our children

“In Africa there is a concept known as ‘ubuntu’ – the profound sense that we are human only through the humanity of others; that if we are to accomplish anything in this world it will in equal measure be due to the work and achievement of others.”

Nelson Mandela

Too many times we find it easy to complain about the issues that are affecting our education system; we find it easy to blame other people. We say things like; the education department is failing our children, the teachers are not teaching the children correctly and the parents are not being supportive. All this is does not lead to the changes which we all desire. The only thing we achieve by doing this is creating divisions between us.

The responsibility of teaching our children does not only fall upon the government or rather the department of education. Nor does it lie only in the hands of the teachers. Blaming the department or the teachers will not change the results that our children are getting. The critical pillars needed for the successes of our education system are; the department of education, teachers, students, parents and society as a whole working together.

We at Nubian Smarts are firm believers in the spirit of ubuntu; we believe that if we all work together we will be able to effectively solve the issues surrounding our education crisis. We do this by incorporating the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) into the applications that we are developing, and by working with highly experienced teachers. Our aim is to make sure that our applications are not only fun for the children but that they address the needs of the teachers and the department.

I myself am a parent and for me it was important that the applications are educational and that they allowed the parents the opportunity to track the progress that the child is making. I wanted parents to be able to log into the application and see which sections their child is struggling with so that they can assist the child.  I also wanted to give the teachers the option of tracking the progress of the pupils in their classes who have downloaded the application.  We believe that this information would give the teachers the opportunity to be proactive in terms of better preparing the pupils.

In closing I would like to say, the issues facing our educational system are all too real. It is of no use to any of us, for us to stick our heads in the sand with the hope that they will magically disappear. The future of this country demands that we all stand up and work together. I can guarantee that our hard work will not be in vain. It is up to us as society to play a more pivotal role in assisting to address these challenges. Each and every one of us needs to look deep into ourselves and ask “what it is, that I can do to assist the future of our country to achieve their dreams?”
